Baby Nursery Location- HELP
on January 5th, 2012 at 7:55 PMWe are in Florida! All of our belongings are on a truck somewhere between San Diego and Orlando, so we are basically camping in a house, lots of fun. We do have a guest bed and loaner sofa, which the awesome furniture store we ordered a new sectional from let us use. Kolbe also bought a cheap TV so we can watch TV at night and of course we brought along the Playstation. We are getting random projects done and currently we are debating where the baby’s room will be. I’m not allowed to tell you which room I am campaigning for (and let’s be honest I’m the mom so I’ll probably get my way but……. I happen to have a husband with an opinion, imagine that). However, I will give you the pros and cons to each. One room will be the nursery and the other room the guest room. Here goes…..
Here is our house floor plan. The master suite is on the left side of the house and the other 3 bedrooms are on the right side.
Option 1: Make bedroom #2 the nursery and Bedroom #3 the guest room. The baby will be close to the main area of the house while the guests will have some privacy by being farther away from the main areas of the house. The babies room will be close to her own bathroom and in the middle of the night the walk from our room to the nursery will be shorter.
Option 2: Make bedroom #2 the guest room and bedroom #3 or #4 the nursery. Bedroom #2 is the biggest room so the guest will feel comfortable and roomy with a queen size bed, while bedrooms 3 and 4 are smaller and will be quieter because they are farther from the main areas of the house. As are family grows the larger rooms will make more sense to transition kids into and possibly 2 kids sharing a room, but this will not apply for awhile (unless like my husband says we are shot gunning these kids out, yikes!)
Give me your thoughts!

I would use #3 for the nursery. You shouldn’t have as much noise from back yards or front streets. Also, insulated better by more inside walls. Smaller, and then you can keep it neat, simple and tidy and use one of the other rooms for a toy room and a guest room. Much more peaceful for baby rest time. But hey, I would keep that little one in a small cradle or playpen in your room for quite awhile—less chasing in the middle of the night, and the peace of knowing that your baby is near. Just enjoy the cute little bundle of joy, whichever room you decide on.
Thanks Maureen! I do plan on keeping her close to my bed at night, mostly so I don’t have to go to far for nightly feedings, and I can’t wait to enjoy her!
Will you be having guests often, if so I can see where rm 2 would be good as the guest room. Even though I would rather not have guests have to go to far for the bathroom, modesty and such. I would prefer to have my baby away from the street so 3 would be my choice.
Ok this may sound a bit crazy but @I noticed that you have two master walk in closets. I would put the baby in the one of those. After having three kids I wish that I had a big walk in closet that could be used as a small little baby room. It is quiet in there and noise from the rest of the house won’t filter in too much. Anyway that is my thought.
I like the idea of the closet. I am planning on keeping her close when she is first born, I bought a bassinet that I’m thinking will stay in the room with us, but the closet is a perfect plan for when we start filling this house up!
I was going to say Master closet too. I’m a little over protective and like having them really close.
I’m protective too, I’m planning on keeping her in a bassinet for the first few months, at least until she starts sleeping for more than 2 hours.
Since I haven’t had kids I don’t know if my opinion really counts…but I’d say keep her in your room until she isn’t doing night time feedings. If you are having to walk to the other side of the house no matter what room you chose that means more time awake during the night for you and from what I’ve heard you want to get all the sleep you can. My sister had her kids sleep in a playpen next to the side of her bed that you could adjust so they were almost at her level so she could just roll over and feed them. I’d say with potty training you’ll want them close to a bathroom, I’ve seen lots of kids get lost in the middle of the night trying to find the bathroom and not being able to hold it. The nice thing is furniture is movable and you can try out how you like the different rooms as a nursery. A lady I visit taught with would vacuum while her kids slept when they were younger so now they can sleep where ever (nap times at families houses) and it doesn’t matter what goes on they can sleep through it. I think training them to sleep through the noise is a great idea. Good luck picking! You should post some pictures of your house before and after you’ve decorated it.
Oh a problem I wish I had.
First of all, most of these comments say keep her in your room for a long time, but my experience was so different. We kicked Beck out after about a week because every little noise he made woke us up. So we said, “See ya, kid, we can’t sleep well with you here. Enjoy your own room.” Back to the rooms…I first thought room 3 since it’s off from the street, but if you put her in her room and still have to do night feedings, it would be nice to just walk straight into #2 instead of having to walk down that hall to get to #3. I can’t really decide between the two, but those were the pros and cons I noticed.
Those were my thoughts too, I had planned on keeping her in a bassinet next to our bed but if she wakes up easily maybe I’ll consider the closet! Haha, or her own room, I know I love my sleep.
So all the closet comments made me laugh because that was my first thought. Honestly a lot really depends on the baby. With Emily she is 7 months old and we just moved her out of our room. She was and is a really quiet baby and slept well through everything so having her in there wasn’t a big deal. With Ryan he was constantly crying so moving him far away from us soon was the best idea for all of us. Also by the time the baby is a month old it isn’t too much to be expecting her to be sleeping for 8 hours at a time especially if you do a dream feeding. Emily was sleeping for 10 and 11 hours at a time and it was amazing! Good luck a lot of being a mom is instinct and what works best for you!
