Food Trucks and Florida

by Designgal on February 3rd, 2012 at 8:58 AM

Our neighbor friends invited us to eat at a food truck gathering last night.  We followed them and after 20 minutes of driving we began doubting our decision, I mean who drives 20 minutes for a food truck?  And mind you, food trucks in San Diego are just a reason to punish yourself and drink Pepto Bismol all night.  Anyway, we get to the spot and we park in a big field and it looks like we are headed to a carnival.  There are tons of people milling around and long lines in front of a bunch of food trucks.  Our neighbors are excitedly telling us about their favorite trucks and where the best places to eat are, apparently they are regulars, they were going on and on about how good this food is and how it’s always on the first Thursday of the month and they come all the time. Then they started talking about Food Truck Wars and how there is one coming up at a mall in a neighboring city and how excited they are to go, seriously people, Florida takes their food trucks seriously!

Kolbe is looking at me like it was my crazy idea to eat here and I tell him to be a good sport, it COULD be good.  There were lots of seafood places but I decided I would steer clear of them while pregnant so we opted for the Korean BBQ Taco Box, the line was nice and long so that looked like a good sign.  PLUS the truck is spray painted yellow- the whole thing- trim and all, very classy. The box came with your choice of meat (Spicy Pork shown here) and I chose a Spicy Pork Taco, a hot wing with some weird name sauce, fried tofu and cheese sticks.  I think the cheese sticks are the long skinny pieces with the spicy mayo on top, and I love spicy mayo- mostly on sushi but since I can’t have sushi…..  Overall we were pretty impressed the pork was yummy and while I was skeptical of the fried tofu and cheese sticks they were really yummy too.  We also stood in a very long line for these supposedly awesome cupcakes, we took them home since we were full on Korean Tacos and we each tried half of 2 of the cupcakes.  They were OK, but I don’t think Florida has tried my cupcakes yet!

I woke up this morning and my stomach is happy so overall the food truck night was a good adventure, I’m not sure if we will become regulars but at least we know every first Thursday of the month we can always have Korean BBQ Tacos!  I’ll be posting soon about other fun Florida quirks and how we are liking our new home- just been a little busy with forced nesting, getting everything organized, painted and ready before this baby gets here, in less than 5 weeks, crazy.

Craziest Ceiling Fan I’ve Ever Seen

by Designgal on January 20th, 2012 at 8:05 AM
Posted In: Uncategorized

We’ve been told the summers in Florida get really hot, and I mean really, really HOT.  Ya, sounds fun huh?  Anyway almost every room in our house has a ceiling fan.  Most of them are just normal looking ceiling fans, but the one in our great room is a little crazy.  It doesn’t have 1 fan it has 2!  Ours has a light fixture that hangs in the middle so it gives light too.  I was curious as to where they found this fan, it took me awhile to find it online and when I did I’m glad it wasn’t us that bought it, it was over $1600, like I said- CRAZY, but I hope it helps to keep as cool this summer.  Oh, and it does look pretty cool in the room- pictures of the finished great room to come in the future, once our new sectional arrives!

High Tech Baby!

by Designgal on January 18th, 2012 at 8:12 AM

So what happens when you put your husband in charge of researching baby monitors?   Most people would end up with quick pick video camera or just a sound monitor, not ME!

I end up with a super duty video monitor that we can access remotely from our cell phones or computers- anytime or anywhere!  My husband is a bit of a research guru/obsessed and loves to research anything!  So when he shows me our “baby monitor”  I was a bit shocked at how high tech it was, but as he told me the cool benefits I quickly became a fan.  The cost is another great feature, some of the baby monitors were over $200, we got 2 cameras for under $180.  We can even check in on our baby when we leave her with the sitter (slightly stalkerish I know!)  And don’t worry we can also tilt/pan the view and zoom, holy crap!  Our baby we will be well monitored, or won’t ever get away with any mischief :)

Thanks honey, for keep our soon to be precious cargo well protected.

Baby Room Rug

This little girl’s room is nicely on it’s way to coming together.  I was in TJ Maxx, on one of my many trips to get “stuff” for our new house, and saw this awesome rug.  I know it doesn’t necessarily shout BABY but that’s part of what I love about it.   The colors are bright and the flowers are stylized enough that the rug isn’t too stuffy.  My whole design concept is to keep her room colorful and bright.  I don’t want her room to consist of matchy matchy furniture, I want the more eclectic look of different pieces coming together to create a great, and a little snazzy, design.  This rug is heading in the right direction!

Baby Room DECIDED

by Designgal on January 7th, 2012 at 4:59 PM

Thanks for all your input!  We were still debating things Thursday night and figured we had at least another day or so before the movers showed up.  We were woken up at 8am Friday morning, which since we are still on California time was equivalent to 5am, to the doorbell.  I heard Kolbe tell the person we weren’t expecting them and then he came in to our room and informed me the movers were here!  I was excited all our stuff was here but we still had things we were planning on getting done before they showed up- like deciding on the baby’s room location.

First off, my vote was for room #2, I like the idea of having the baby close and since she is our first I figured when she is sleeping I can keep quiet.  I also figured our guests would have a little more privacy being down the hall and when this little girl is older her room can move toward the back of the house and she can have some privacy (that’s if we stay in Florida that long).  Also we live in a quiet subdivision and our house is in a cul-de-sac so road noise and neighbors aren’t really an issue.  Kolbe had wanted #4 because it is the smallest room and she could graduate to the bigger room when she was older or when we have our next kid.  The pool heater is right outside the door and it is kind of loud and I don’t want her to be at the very back of the house.

Anyway, the movers, so with them being here unexpectedly I had to make a quick decision.  I chose room #3,  I’m still not sold on having her so far down the hall but I figure she will sleep in a bassinet by our bed until she sleeps for more than 2 or 3 hours at a time, and thanks to a few ideas if she keeps us awake I will put her bassinet in the closet so I can get some quality 2 hour naps between feedings!  I do love the size and layout of this room and the walk-in closet is going to be awesome cause she already has a complete wardrobe for the first year of her life!  Here is a picture of the room right now, I need to get thinking on paint colors and figuring out where all the furniture goes!

While I’m sitting here writing this post the little girl is doing what feels like small tidal waves in my belly, she is definitely getting stronger!  I’m at 31 weeks, I can’t believe we have just over 2 months left!  At lunch we were talking about how little time we had left and Kolbe said, ya I guess we need to start thinking about getting the car seat installed and your overnight bag packed.  Yes honey we do need to get working on that stuff but let’s get the room painted and the crib assembled first :)
